Tungsten has a high melting point, a low vapor pressure and a low evaporation rate. The chemical properties of tungsten are very stable. It does not react with air and water at room temperature. When there is no heating, any concentration of hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, nitric acid, hydrofluoric acid and aqua regia have no effect on tungsten. At room temperature, tungsten quickly dissolves in a mixture of hydrofluoric acid and concentrated nitric acid, but does not work in alkali solutions. In the presence of air, the molten base can oxidize tungsten into tungstate. In the presence of oxidizing agents (NaNO3, NaNO2, KClO3, PbO2), the tungstate reaction is more violent. At high temperature, it can combine with chlorine, bromine, iodine, carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, etc., but not with hydrogenation.
Because of its good mechanical and physical properties, tungsten is often used to make high temperature resistant parts. For example, they can be used as filament in light bulbs and electronic tubes, anode materials in X-ray tubes, thermal conductivity materials in high temperature furnaces, rocket nozzles and insulation materials, military balancing parts and manufacturing flywheels, and tungston-based carbide tool materials.
